Updated: 5 days ago

👉The UiB department of Earth Sciences and the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research are looking for a PhD candidate interested in Arctic Paleoceanography.

👉 As a PhD candidate, your goal is to generate new insights into Atlantic water inflow into the Arctic and its influence on sea ice cover in past warm periods (e.g. the interglacials of Marine Isotope Stage 5, 11, 19, 31, Pliocene).

👉 Your main tasks are to generate paleoceanographic records from the Nordic Seas, Fram Strait and Arctic Ocean for one or more interglacials. You will mainly use marine palynology (dinoflagellate cysts) for reconstructing Atlantic water inflow and sea ice evolution.

👉 Part of the lab work will be done at Ghent University (Belgium). There may also be an opportunity to work with inorganic geochemistry (stable isotopes of foraminifers) at the University of Bergen (UiB).

👉 This topic is connected to the i2B Into The Blue ERC Synergy Grant and will also be relevant for the research planned within Arctic Ocean 2050.

👉 More information about the job can be found here.

‼️ Deadline for application: 8 March 2026
